My Journey

As a first-generation student, there were obstacles that were bound for me to face. Questions I had to ask myself early on in my educational journey. What are my goals? Are they obtainable? Can I actually do something my parents were never given the opportunity to accomplish? Proceed to "read more" to hear my pathway to success.

My Ambitions

I aspire to study nursing and help our nation’s most vulnerable populations. According to the NIH, our country has seen stark health disparities between racial groups and ethnic minorities who are often more susceptible to chronic disease and premature death. As an African-American woman, I care deeply about these issues and plan to pursue African-American studies so I can better understand the historical context that has contributed to these inequalities.

I want to fight discrimination in hospitals and I am confident I can best do this as a nurse. Becoming a nurse to serve others is not just a professional goal for me - it is personal. Our past and present are still stained with unproven claims and misconceptions about black patients which have created lasting repercussions within the health industry. This is causing malpractice and recurring failure to effectively treat black patients. As a nurse with background knowledge in discriminatory practices against black patients, I can do my part to combat racism in hospitals.
